जय पूर्ण-परात्पर पूर्ण-मनोरथ पुरुशोत्तम-गुरु देहि पदम् ।

जय नित्य-निरामय सत्य-सनातन ब्रह्म-निरञ्जन देहि पदम् ॥ १ ॥

जय जगज्जन-वन्दित भक्त-जनार्चित पुष्प-समर्चित देहि पदम् ।

जय श्रुति-परिपालन पाप-विनाशन पूत-जगत्त्रय देहि पदम् ॥ २ ॥

जय ज्ञान-दिवाकर प्रेम-रसार्णव भक्ति-सुधार्णव देहि पदम् ।

जय करुणा-सागर वाञ्छा-पूरक मुक्ति-प्रदायक देहि पदम् ॥ ३ ॥

जय रतिपति-मर्दन दुर्मद-शोषण मोह-निवारण देहि पदम् ।

जय कुमति-विनाशन सुमति-प्रकाशन भवभय-भञ्जन देहि पदम् ॥ ४ ॥

जय भिक्षु-वेष-धर वृद्ध-कलेवर पञ्चकच्छ-धर देहि पदम् ।

जय दीर्घ-जटा-धर शुभ्र-कलेवर धवल-स्मश्रु-युत देहि पदम् ॥ ५ ॥

जय ताल-व्यजन-धर योग-दण्ड-धर उष्णीष-धर देहि पदम् ।

जय स्फटिक-माल्य-धर अक्ष-माल्य-धर कम्बल-धर-गुरु देहि पदम् ॥ ६ ॥

जय नाम-गान-प्रिय रामदास-प्रिय गुरु-त्रय-सम्युत देहि पदम् ।

जय वरदाभय-कर सुषमा-सागर यति-कुल-भूषण देहि पदम् ॥ ७ ॥

जय योग-ध्यान-रत मन्दहास-युत धूम्रपान-रत देहि पदम् ।

जय चिन्मय-गुरु-वर अतिमृदु-स्वर-युत देवकी-सेवित देहि पदम् ॥ ८ ॥

jaya pūrṇa-parātpara pūrṇa-manoratha puruśottama-guru dehi padam ।

jaya nitya-nirāmaya satya-sanātana brahma-nirañjana dehi padam ॥ 1 ॥

(O Yogi Ramsuratkumar!) May you be victorious (jaya).

O Complete one (pūrṇa-) and the Greatest of the great (-parāt-para)

One whose desires (-manoratha) are totally fulfilled (pūrṇa-)

The Guru (-guru) who is the best among human beings (puruśottama-)

Grant me (dehi) Mukti, the ultimate state (padam).

One who is eternally (nitya-) free from diseases (-nirāmaya)

One who is the eternal (-sanātana) truth (satya-)

One who is the untainted (-nirañjana) Brahman or ultimate reality (brahma-)

jaya jagajjana-vandita bhakta-janārcita puṣpa-samarcita dehi padam ।

jaya śruti-paripālana pāpa-vināśana pūta-jagattraya dehi padam ॥ 2 ॥

One adored (-vandita) by all the people of the world (jagat-jana-)

Worshipped (-arcita) by devotees (bhakta-jana-)

Well worshipped (-samarcita) with flowers (puṣpa-)

Protector (-paripālana) of the scriptures (śruti-)

Destroyer (-vināśana) of sins (pāpa-)

Purifier (pūta-) of the three (-traya) worlds (-jagat-)

jaya jñāna-divākara prema-rasārṇava bhakti-sudhārṇava dehi padam ।

jaya karuṇā-sāgara vāñchā-pūraka mukti-pradāyaka dehi padam ॥ 3 ॥

O Sun (-divākara) of Knowledge (jñāna-)

O Ocean (-arṇava) of the essence (-rasa-) of Love (prema-)

O Ocean (-arṇava) of the nectar (-sudha-) of devotion (bhakti-)

O Ocean (-sāgara) of compassion (karuṇā-)

O Fulfiller (-pūraka) of desires (vāñchā-)

O Giver (-pradāyaka) of liberation (mukti-)

jaya ratipati-mardana durmada-śoṣaṇa moha-nivāraṇa dehi padam ।

jaya kumati-vināśana sumati-prakāśana bhavabhaya-bhañjana dehi padam ॥ 4 ॥

O destroyer (-mardana) of the Madana, the love god, the husband of Rati (rati-pati-)

O eradicator (-śoṣaṇa) of wicked arrogance (dur-mada-)

O remover (-nivāraṇa) of delusion (moha-)

O annihilator (-vināśana) of ignorance (ku-mati-)

O illuminator (-prakāśana) of wisdom (su-mati-)

O vanquisher (-bhañjana) of the fear (-bhaya-) of existence (bhava-)

jaya bhikṣu-veṣa-dhara vṛddha-kalevara pañcakaccha-dhara dehi padam ।

jaya dīrgha-jaṭā-dhara śubhra-kalevara dhavala-smaśru-yuta dehi padam ॥ 5 ॥

One having (-dhara) the disguise or attire (-veṣa-) of a beggar (bhikṣu-)

One having an aged (vṛddha-) body (-kalevara)

One wearing (-dhara) the dhoti in the pañcakaccha style (pañcakaccha-)

One having (-dhara) a long (dīrgha-) matted hair (jaṭā-)

One whose body (-kalevara) is bright or white (śubhra-)

One endowed (-yuta) with a white (dhavala-) beard (-smaśru-)

jaya tāla-vyajana-dhara yoga-daṇḍa-dhara uṣṇīṣa-dhara dehi padam ।

jaya sphaṭika-mālya-dhara akṣa-mālya-dhara kambala-dhara-guru dehi padam ॥ 6 ॥

One holding (-dhara) a fan (-vyajana-) made of palm (tāla-)  

One holding (-dhara) a staff (-daṇḍa-) of yoga (yoga-)

One wearing (-dhara) a turban (uṣṇīṣa-)

One wearing (-dhara) a crystal (sphaṭika-) garland (-mālya-)

One wearing (-dhara) a japamala, the garland (-mālya-) of beads (akṣa-)

O Guru (-guru) wearing (-dhara-) a shawl (kambala-)

jaya nāma-gāna-priya rāmadāsa-priya guru-traya-samyuta dehi padam ।

jaya varadābhaya-kara suṣamā-sāgara yati-kula-bhūṣaṇa dehi padam ॥ 7 ॥

One who loves (-priya) singing (-gāna-) the names of Gods (nāma-)

One who loves (-priya) his guru Papa Ramdas (rāmadāsa-)             

One who is endowed with (-samyuta) three (-traya-) Gurus (guru-)

One whose hands (-kara) indicate giving boons (varada-) and destroying fear (-abhaya-)

O ocean (-sāgara) of splendor or exquisite beauty (suṣamā-)

O jewel (-bhūṣaṇa) among the group (-kula-) of sages (yati-)

jaya yoga-dhyāna-rata mandahāsa-yuta dhūmrapāna-rata dehi padam ।

jaya cinmaya-guru-vara atimṛdu-svara-yuta devakī-sevita dehi padam ॥ 8 ॥

One who is engaged (-rata) in Yogic (yoga-) meditation (-dhyāna-)

One who is endowed (-yuta) with a gentle (manda-) smile (-hāsa-)

One who is engaged (-rata) in smoking (dhūmra-pāna-)

O best (-vara) among the consciousness-personified (cin-maya-) Gurus (-guru-)

One who is endowed (-yuta) with a very soft (ati -mṛdu-) voice (-svara-)

One who is served (-sevita) by Ma Devakī (devakī-)

योनयः = Origins (योनिः)

1.  Verse

Salutations to thee, O Yogi Immortal, who descends from the effulgent sun, illumines the transcendent sky, and brings light into darkness.

With heart overflowing with adoration for thee, I humbly offer this garland of praises.

स्तवः

ॐ हत-ध्वान्त-दीपित-सर्वातिशायि-ख-तेजोमय-सूर्यावतारामर-योगिने ते नमः ।
भवद्भक्ति-परिप्लुत-हृदयस्त इमां स्तव-मालां नम्रतयार्पयामि ।। १ ।।

Om hata-dhvānta-dīpita-sarvātiśāyi-kha-tējōmaya-sūryāvatārāmara-yōginē tē namaḥ ।
bhavadbhakti-paripluta-hr̥dayasta imāṁ stava-mālāṁ namratayārpayāmi ।। 1 ।।

      • हत-ध्वान्त-दीपित-सर्वातिशायि-ख-तेजोमय-सूर्यावतारामर-योगिने = to the Yogi (योगी), who is immortal (अमरः), who has descended (अवतारः) from the effulgent (तेजोमयः) sun (सूर्यः), by whom the all-surpassing (सर्व+अतिशायीम्) sky (खम्) is illumined (दीपितम्), and who destroyed (हतः) darkness (ध्वान्तः)
    • भवद्भक्ति-परिप्लुत-हृदयः = I, being one whose heart (हृदयम्) is overwhelmed (परिप्लुतम्) with devotion (भक्तिः) for thee (भवान्)
      • नम्रतया = humbly (नम्रता)
      • अर्पयामि = offer (अर्पयति)
      • इमाम् = this (अयम्)
      • स्तव-मालाम् = garland (माला) of praises (स्तवः)

Salutations to thee, O Ancient Sage, dispatched from your heavenly abode to Arunachala, the all-purifying Mountain of Fire.

Transported by the bhaavaa of my longing, birth after birth, I follow you to this far realm.

om bhavaddivyāspadataḥ sarva-pāvakāgni-parvatārunācalaṁ prēṣita-sanātanarṣayē tē namaḥ ।

bhavatspr̥hā-bhāva-vaśānugō janmani janmanīmaṁ dūrastha-pradēśamanucarāmi ।। 2 ।।

ॐ भवद्दिव्यास्पदतः सर्व-पावकाग्नि-पर्वतारुनाचलं प्रेषित-सनातनर्षये ते नमः ।
भवत्स्पृहा-भाव-वशानुगो जन्मनि जन्मनीमं दूरस्थ-प्रदेशमनुचरामि ।। २ ।।

    • सर्व+पावक+अग्नि+पर्वत+अरुनाचलम् = to Arunaachala (अरुणाचलः), which is the all-purifying (सर्व-पावक) Mountain (पर्वतः) of Fire (अग्निः)
  • भवत्स्पृहा+भाव+वश+अनुगः = I, being one who follows (अनुगः) you, under the influence (वशः) of the emotional sentiment (भावः) of my longing (स्पृहा) towards you (भवान्)
    • (त्वाम्) अनुचरामि = follow (अनुचरति) you (त्वम्)
    • इमं दूरस्थ-प्रदेशम् = to this (अयम्) far-off (दूरस्थः) realm (प्रदेशः)
    • जन्मनि जन्मनि = in every birth (जन्म)

3.  Verse

Salutations to thee, O Son of Ramdas, who was liberated and transformed in the cosmic rapture of Lord Rama’s Name.

With faith unwavering, I anoint my body with the dust of your lotus feet.

ॐ प्रभु-राम-नाम-ब्रह्मानन्द-जीवन्मुक्त-विजात-रामदासात्मजाय ते नमः ।
ध्रुव-श्रद्धो भवत्-कमल-पाद-रेणुना मद्देहं लेपयामि ।। ३ ।।

om prabhu-rāma-nāma-brahmānanda-jīvanmukta-vijāta-rāmadāsātmajāya tē namaḥ ।
dhruva-śrad’dhō bhavat-kamala-pāda-rēṇunā maddēhaṁ lēpayāmi ।। 3 ।।

Salutations to thee, who wields the fan of palms like Lord Parashurama’s blade of righteousness to deflect evil and brighten vital airs.

Ever searching for hope and goodness on life’s path, it is you who shows me the way and ensures safe passage.

ॐ पाप-भ्रंशार्थ-प्राण-प्रभासनार्थ-ताल-वृन्त-श्रीपरशुराम-धर्म-फल-धराय ते नमः ।
सदा जीवन-पथे चीयमानाशा-सौजन्यो मार्गं दर्शयस्यभय-गतिं दृढी-करोषि ।। ४ ।।

om pāpa-bhranśārtha-prāṇa-prabhāsanārtha-tāla-vr̥nta-śrīparaśurāma-dharma-phala-dharāya tē namaḥ ।
sadā jīvana-pathē cīyamānāśā-saujan’yō mārgaṁ darśayasyabhaya-gatiṁ dr̥ḍhī-karōṣi ।। 4 ।।

Salutations to thee O Sovereign of Beggars, whose begging bowl spills over with the nectar of compassion.
Emptied of self-possession, I am blessed with your bountiful gifts.

ॐ उद्वृत्त-करुणामृत-भिक्षा-भाण्ड-पिण्डाराधिराजाय ते नमः ।
निरहंकृतस्ते भूर्युपायनैरनुगृहीतोऽस्मि ।। ५ ।।

Om udvr̥tta-karuṇāmr̥ta-bhikṣā-bhāṇḍa-piṇḍārādhirājāya tē namaḥ |

nirahaṅkr̥tastē bhūryupāyanairanugr̥hītō̕smi || 5 ||

  • नि:+अहंकृतः (अहम्) = I, being one who is devoid of egoism (नि: + अहंकृतः)

    • अनुगृहीतः = blessed (अनुगृहीतः)
      • ते भूरि+उपायनैः = with your (त्वम्) bountiful (भूरि) gifts (उपायनम्)

6.  Verse

Salutations to thee, O Victorious Yogi, who reduces to ashes karma’s taint in your handheld dhuni of fire and smoke.

Ensnared by the ceaseless allure of desire and fear, I am purified by your mystic fire.

ॐ भस्मीकृत-कर्म-दोषाग्नि-धूम-गर्भ-हवनी-पाणि-जिष्णु-योगिने ते नमः ।
अनवरत-काम-भयाकर्षण-पाश-बद्धस्ते गूढाग्निना पवित्री-क्रिये ।। ६ ।।

Om bhasmīkr̥ta-karma-dōṣāgni-dhūma-garbha-havanī-pāṇi-jiṣṇu-yōginē tē namaḥ ।
anavarata-kāma-bhayākarṣaṇa-pāśa-bad’dhastē gūḍhāgninā pavitrī-kriyē ।। 6 ।।

      • भस्मीकृत-कर्म-दोषाग्नि-धूम-गर्भ-हवनी-पाणि-जिष्णु-योगिने = to the Victorious (जिष्णुः) Yogi (योगी), in whose hand (पाणिः) is the sacrificial fire pit (हवनी) containing (गर्भः) fire (अग्निः) and smoke (धूमः) that reduces to ashes (भस्मीकृतम्) the taint (दोषः) of our karma (कर्म)

  • नमः = Salutations (नमः)
    • ते = to thee (त्वम्)
      • आनन्द-मूर्ति-हृदिस्थ-शुभ्रार्क-नित्य-प्रियाय = to the Eternal (नित्यः) Beloved (प्रियः), who is the embodiment (मूर्तिः) of bliss (आनन्दः), who is the radiant (शुभ्रः) Sun (अर्कः) residing in the heart (हृदय+स्थः)
    • निमग्न-मनाः = Being one whose mind (मनः) is immersed (निमग्नम्)

Long ago, when Yogi Ramsuratkumar still wandered freely around Arunachala,

I enjoyed seeking him out and presenting to him a garland of bright marigolds

along with, of course, a packet of his favorite cigarettes. Now, decades later,

like those simple flowers, this Garland of Praises is my offering to him who is

everywhere in the boundless heart of his Father’s Grace.

Throughout the vast sweep of Mother India’s history, Sanskrit hymns, called

stotrams,” have been composed and sung in honor of Her spiritual luminaries.

While I have modeled the Yogi Ramsuratkumar Garland of Praises on that

classical form, I don’t mean to suggest that it is comparable to those literary

masterpieces; rather, only that I strive to use that age-old form to give voice to

some of the same undying sentiments.

Each of the garland’s 18 verses is in praise of an attribute of the Guru, and each

is an expression of gratitude for his grace to heal or comfort or protect or guide

us in the troubled circumstances of our lives. Whenever Yogi Ramsuratkumar

is remembered or summoned in this way, those who wish to keep him in their

hearts and minds discover that his nearness grows ever sweeter and more

wondrous.

It is my prayer that in having these verses translated into Sanskrit…the fabled “language of the devas”…it can be sung in celebration of Him, even in devaloka, for all time.

bhava, भावः Meaning a deeply moving “emotion, sentiment, mood or mental state.”

2  Ramdas: Refers to Swami Ramdas (1884-1963) born Vittal Rao in Kerala state. Yogi                                    Ramsuratkumar’s guru.

3  Lord Rama’s Name: Refers to the Ram Mantra. Om Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram.                                       Rama was the 7th avatar of Vishnu. His legend was told in the Ramayana.  

1  Parashurama: The 6th avatar of Vishnu and one of the seven rishis. He appeared

in the treta yuga as a warrior-saint armed with three celestial weapons, fore-

most of which was an axe or parashu.

2  karma, कर्म: Meaning “action, work or deed.” The spiritual principle of how cause and

effect shape future events.

3  dhuni, हवनी: Meaning a yogi’s ritual fire pit into which karmic attachments are offered

and burned to ashes. Referring here to the smoking of cigarettes for this                                             purpose.

4  medicinal berries: Refers to amla fruit, from the Sanskrit “amalaki,”  Indian gooseberry.

5  maya, माया: Broadly meaning “illusion,” the sense world of manifold phenomena held in

Vedanta to conceal the unity of absolute being.

Name: From nama, नाम, referring to the repetition of a sacred Name.

2  samsara, संसारः The soul, finding itself awash in the sea of samsara, strives to find                                        release, or moksha, from it’s past karma, which forms the web of which samsara                                    is comprised.

3  Nataraja: Sanskrit, meaning “Lord of the Dance.” This is one of the names of Siva. It is                                                by Siva’s dance of bliss that all things…atoms and universes alike…are created,                                       sustained and destroyed.

1  Dharma, धर्मः Meaning the principal that orders the universe, society or individual                                        conduct. Referring to the sanatana dharma or “eternal order.”

2  Vedas, वेदाः Referring to the fourVedas which comprise the primary texts of Hinduism.

3  Punnai Tree: In Tamil folklore, the “tree that cures.” Referring here to the tree under                                    which Yogi Ramsuratkumar counseled devotees.

4  Sannidhi, संनिधिः Meaning “nearness” or “nearness to the Lord.” Sannidhi Agraharam is                             the name of the street adjacent to the Arunachaleshwar Temple where Yogi                                   Ramsuratkumar’s small house was located.

5  Bharata Varsha, भारतवर्षः The ancient name for India as designated in numerous

sacred texts.

6  Kurukshetra, कुरुक्षेत्रम्: The name of the field on which Lord Krishna drove Arjuna’s

chariot into battle and dispensed the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita in the Hindu              epic, the Mahabharata.

7  Jaya, जय: Meaning “be victorious.”

8  Raya, रायः Meaning “king” or “prince.”

The prayer wishing good for Yogi Ramsuratkumar
When we worship a deity, it is a common practice to end the worship with a prayer wishing all goodness and auspiciousness for that deity.

Here the text is given in Sanskrit, English and Tamil. The meaning is provided in English.


मङ्गलं देशिकेन्द्राय यमिनां चक्रवर्तिने । सदा-शिव-स्वरूपाय तस्मै भवतु मङ्गलम् ॥
सम्सार-सागरोद्धार-सेतुभूताङ्घ्रिरेणवे । गुरवे सर्वलोकानां योगिरामाय मङ्गलम् ॥
ॐ स्थापकाय च धर्मस्य सर्वधर्मस्वरूपिणे । अवतारवरिष्ठाय योगिरामाय मङ्गलम् ॥
मङ्गलं गुरुदेवाय देवकीमात्रे च मङ्गलम् । मङ्गलं भक्तवृन्देभ्यः सर्वलोकाय मङ्गलम् ॥

Śrī-yogirāmasuratakumāra-pañcakam

Shloka comprising of five verses on Sri Yogi Ramsuratkumar

divyabālakam aruṇavāsinaṃ mattabhikṣukaṃ yogipuṅgavam |

nāmajāpakam abhayadāyakaṃ divyasadguruṃ yoginamāśraye || 1 ||

śaraṇaṃ yogirāmasuratakumāra |

  • divya bālakam = The divine child, i.e., Godchild;
  • vāsinaṃ = The resident; aruṇa = of Tiruvannamalai;
  • matta = The mad; bhikṣukaṃ = beggar;
  • puṅgavam = The most eminent; yogi = among the Yogis;
  • jāpakam = One who does repeated chanting; nāma = of Ramanama;
  • dāyakaṃ = The provider; abhaya = of refuge;
  • divya = The divine; sadguruṃ = preceptor;
  • yoginam = In that Yogi; āśraye = I take refuge;
  • (tvameva = You are my only); śaraṇaṃ = asylum; yogirāmasuratakumāra = O Yogi Ramsuratkumar!

malinaveṣiṇaṃ malavināśakaṃ mandahāsinaṃ madhurabhāṣiṇam |

kāruṇyasāgaraṃ bhaktavatsalaṃ śrutisetupālakaṃ yoginamāśraye || 2 ||

śaraṇaṃ yogirāmasuratakumāra |

  • veṣiṇaṃ = One who is clothed; malina = in dirty clothes;
  • vināśakaṃ = The destroyer; mala = of impurities;
  • hāsinaṃ = One who smiles; manda = gently;
  • bhāṣiṇam = One who talks; madhura = sweetly;
  • sāgaraṃ = One who is the ocean of; kāruṇya = compassion;
  • vatsalaṃ = One who is affectionate; bhakta = towards devotees;
  • pālakaṃ = The protector of; śrutisetu = the Vedic principles;
  • yoginam = In that Yogi; āśraye = I take refuge;
  • (tvameva = You are my only); śaraṇaṃ = asylum; yogirāmasuratakumāra = O Yogi Ramsuratkumar!

saguṇanirguṇaṃ sakalaniṣkalaṃ kāmitapradaṃ kāmanāśakam |

vyajanahastakaṃ śmaśrusaṃyutaṃ dhūmrapāyinaṃ yoginamāśraye || 3 ||

śaraṇaṃ yogirāmasuratakumāra |

  • saguṇa = One who has attributes; nirguṇaṃ = and one who is without attributes;
  • sakala = One who has all the differentiations well-articulated; niṣkalaṃ = and is also in the undifferentiated stage;
  • pradaṃ = The giver; kāmita = of the desired objects;
  • nāśakam = The destroyer; kāma = of the desires;
  • hastakaṃ = One who has in his hands; vyajana = the fan;
  • saṃyutaṃ = One who adorns; śmaśru = a beard;
  • pāyinaṃ = one who sucks in; dhūmra = the smoke (of a cigarette);
  • yoginam = In that Yogi; āśraye = I take refuge;
  • (tvameva = You are my only); śaraṇaṃ = asylum; yogirāmasuratakumāra = O Yogi Ramsuratkumar!

vṛddhavigrahaṃ bālakautukaṃ duḥkhahāriṇaṃ saukhyadāyakam |

rāmaraghuvaraṃ kṛṣṇayaduvaraṃ brahmacinmayaṃ yoginamāśraye || 4 ||

śaraṇaṃ yogirāmasuratakumāra |

  • vigrahaṃ = One who has the form; vṛddha = of an old man;
  • kautukaṃ = One who has the enthusiasm; bāla = of a young boy;
  • hāriṇaṃ = The destroyer; duḥkha = of sorrow;
  • dāyakam = The giver; saukhya = of comforts;
  • rāma = He is Rama; raghuvaraṃ = who is the best person in Raghu’s clan;
  • kṛṣṇa = He is Krishna; yaduvaraṃ = who is the best person in Yadu’s clan;
  • brahma cinmayaṃ = He is full of spiritual consciousness;
  • yoginam = In that Yogi; āśraye = I take refuge;
  • (tvameva = You are my only); śaraṇaṃ = asylum; yogirāmasuratakumāra = O Yogi Ramsuratkumar!

tvatpade sadā ramatu me matiḥ tvatpadāmbujam eva me gatiḥ |

pālayasva māṃ he mahāyate, dehi me prabho tvatpade ratiḥ || 5 ||

śaraṇaṃ yogirāmasuratakumāra |

  • ramatu = Let (it) rejoice; me = my; matiḥ = mind; sadā = always; tvatpade = in your feet;
  • tvat = Your; padāmbujam = lotus feet; eva = alone; me = is my; gatiḥ = path (for salvation);
  • pālayasva = You protect; māṃ = me; he mahāyate = O Great Sannyaasi;
  • prabho = O Lord; dehi = Give; me = me; ratiḥ = ardent devotion; tvatpade = towards your feet;

मलिनवेषिणं मलविनाशकं मन्दहासिनं मधुरभाषिणम् |

सगुणनिर्गुणं सकलनिष्कलं कामितप्रदं कामनाशकम् |

1st sloka – Yogi Ramsuratkumar Guru Raja Ashtakam

May Sri Yogi Ramsuratkumar, the king of preceptors and the beloved of Lord Rama, protect us! He is an ascetic; He has subdued his senses through penance; He is solely established in contemplating on the lord of the Raghus (i.e., Sri Rama); he is the Sun that dispels the darkness in the form of worldly existence; He is the desire-yielding gem, Chintamani, for his steadfast devotees; He is the moon that gladdens his disciples; He has a balanced mind. And he is the very embodiment of the name of the Lord Sri Rama.

2nd sloka – Yogi Ramsuratkumar Guru Raja Ashtakam

May Sri Yogi Ramsuratkumar, the king of preceptors and the beloved of Lord Rama, protect us! He is the very essence of the nectar of compassion and in the Kali age. He is the only one who is auspicious and prosperous. He has the discrimination between what is to be done and what is not to be done. He has a lot of merit. He knows the Upanishads and is blissful. He possesses the will to confer (upon his devotees) perfection in the art of discussing (discrimination) about the self and the not-self. He hates those who indulge in spurious arguments.

He has an adorable mental attitude which is marked by steadfastness and magnanimity. He is honourable, high-souled and wise. He is bent upon showing grace to the devotees; He is an abode of virtues. He is an expert speaker. He is full of penance and is scholarly.

He shines with a palmyrah fan. He has a Yoga-staff, turban, coconut shell and panchakacca (dress). He is virtuous, wise and great. He is the repository of the nectar of love for Lord Rama. He is best among the embodied souls. And he is the most desirable person on the earth.

He has the wealth in the form of concentration attained through meditation (on the Lord). And he is always blissful.

He is the directly visible God who manifested Himself on earth in this Kali age which brings in guilt and sin. He is the beloved son of Lord Rudra and Mother Goddess Apeethakuchaa (the presiding deities at Tiruvannamalai). And he treads the path of liberation.

Salutations again and again to the pair of sandals of the adorable Guru who is inside the lotus called yogic concentration, who is the chief means of crossing the ocean of worldly existence and whose mind is delighted in multitudes of good and virtuous people.

Samādhi yōgāmbuja madhyagābhyāṁ sansāra santāraṇa kāraṇābhyāṁ |

Salutations again and again to the pair of sandals of the adorable Guru who became superlatively great due to the excellent instruction he received from his Guru Sri Ramdas and who became a great ascetic due to (chanting) the Sri Rama Mantra.

Śrīrāmadāsāryagurō: Sakāśāt varōpadēśēna mahattamēna |
śrīrāmamantrēṇa tapōdhanābhyāṁ namō nama: Śrīgurupādukābhyām || 19 ||

Salutations (नम:) and salutations (नम:) to the divine (श्री) pair of sandals (पादुकाsandal; पादुकेpair of sandals; पादुकाभ्यांto the pair of sandals) of my spiritual preceptor (गुरु), Yogi Ramsuratkumar;

Who became a great ascetic, whose wealth itself is religious austerities (तपोधन; तप: austerities; धनwealth) because of the superlative greatness(महत्तम; महत्great; तमsuperlative)achieved due to chanting the Sri Rama (श्रीराम) Mantra (मन्त्र) and due to the excellent (वर)teachings (उपदेश)obtained in the presence (सकाश; due to the proximity सकाशात्)of his Guru (गुरु), the noble (आर्य)Sri Ramdas (श्रीरामदास);

Another interpretation – Who became a great ascetic due to the greatest Rama mantra, which is the excellent teaching obtained in the presence of his noble Guru, Sri Ramdas.CHECK

puṣpārcitābhyāṁ ca manōharābhyāṁ namō nama: Śrī gurupādukābhyām || 23 ||

Another version of the sloka: who is like the fruit of the merits acquired by the living beings abiding in all the three worlds.

In this version of the sloka: who is ready for the protection of the helpless.

Śrī rāmamantra śruti pāragābhyāṁ duṣkr̥tyaduścintanadūragābhyāṁ |
anātha sanrakṣaṇa dīkṣitābhyāṁ namō nama: Śrī gurupādukābhyām || 27 ||

Those who read this sacred hymn on the sandals of the adorable Guru every day will certainly attain the pleasurable things of (earthly) life in abundance and also bliss (in the other world), in addition to good education (divine knowledge) and loving devotion to their gurus and God.

Those people (मानुषा:) in this earth (भुवि; भुवनम् earth) who (ये) read (पठन्ति) this sacred (शुभम्) hymn (स्तवम्) on the sandals (पादुका) of the adorable (श्री) Guru (गुरु) every day (नित्यम्)will certainly (ध्रुवम्)attain (लभन्ते)the things which cause enjoyment of pleasure (सुखभोगजातम्; सुख pleasure भोग enjoyment जातम् that which has become) and also happiness(सौख्यम्), in addition to good education (divine knowledge) (विद्याम्)and (च) loving devotion (भक्तिम्) to their gurus (गुरु) and God (दैव)

Śubhaṁ stavaṁ śrī gurupādukāyā: Paṭhanti nityaṁ bhuvimānuṣā yē |
dhruvaṁ labhantē sukhabhōgajātaṁ saukhyaṁ ca vidyāṁ gurudaiva bhaktim || 29 ||

शुभं स्तवं श्री गुरुपादुकाया: पठन्ति नित्यं भुविमानुषा ये |

ध्रुवं लभन्ते सुखभोगजातं सौख्यं च विद्यां गुरुदैव भक्तिम् || २९ ||

By repeatedly chanting these verses (composed) on the holy sandals of the adorable Guru which correspond with the the asterisms, people will attain enhanced wisdom, capacity to discriminate (between the right and the wrong), freedom from grave dangers and abundanceof moneyand grains, all due to the grace of the Guru (Sri Yogi Ramsuratkumar Yogi Maharaj) himself.

Nakṣatrapadyai: Gurupādukāyā: Vijñānavr̥d’dhin̄ca vivēkapuṣṭiṁ |
vipannivr̥ttiṁ dhanadhān’yavr̥d’dhiṁ japāllabhantē ca gurō: Prasādāt || 30 ||

By the grace (प्रसादात्; grace प्रसाद) of the Guru (गुरु), Sri Yogi Ramsuratkumar Yogi Maharaj himself, by repeatedly chanting(जपात्; जप chanting) these 27verses (composed) on the holy sandals (पादुका) of the adorable Guru (गुरु: ; guru’s गुरो: )which correspond with the 27 asterisms or stars (नक्षत्रपद्य; नक्षत्र stars; पद्य verses), people will attain (लभन्ते) enhanced (वृद्धि) wisdom (विज्ञान), and (च) capacity (पुष्टि) to discriminate (विवेक) (between the right and the wrong), prevention (निवृत्ति) ofgrave dangers (विपत्) and (च) abundance (वृद्धि) of money (धन) and grains (धान्य)

नक्षत्रपद्यै: गुरुपादुकाया: विज्ञानवृद्धिंच विवेकपुष्टिम् |

विपन्निवृत्तिं धनधान्यवृद्धिं जपाल्लभन्ते च गुरो: प्रसादात् || ३० ||

Chandas or the meter of this Sanskrit Poem:

Each verse has 4 padams. Each padam has 11 syllables. In Metrical Scheme, Guru (long sound like आ) is represented by “-“ and Lagu (short sound like अ) is represented by “u”.  The meter used to compose the verses is upajaati vruttam which is a combination of upendravajraavruttam (u – u  – – u  u – u  –   – ) and indravajraavruttam (- – u – – u u – u – -).
