Yogi Ramsuratkumar – A RSS Swayamsevak

Many of us were not aware of Poojya Yogi Ramsuratkumar’s connection with RSS. Here is an extract from the book Bhagavan Yogi Ramsuratkumar (Atma ka Paramatma se Milan – The union of Aatma with Paramaatmaa) in Hindi, written by Yogiji’s poorvashram relative, Rama Kanth “Anand”. The English translation of this extract is by Sadhu Prof. V. Rangarajan.

While serving in the Chamariya School, a significant even took place and it is necessary to refer to it. In those days, the Bihar Government did not keep under its direct control the administration of high schools. The Government gave permission under certain conditions and provided some funds also to run the schools. The administration of the schools and the appointment of teachers were looked after by a managing committee. There were nine to eleven members and a secretary for the committee. The Secretary of Chamariya High School was Jorpati Babu. His conduct in running the school was not fair. He indulged in swindling of the school funds and raising unwanted criticism of the teachers. It was his habit to defame others.

Gurudev was such a noble soul who used to attend to his own work and never interfere in the work of others. One who feels sorry for the sufferings of others can never think of causing trouble to others. Even such a person had to fall a victim to the wrath of the secretary. The secretary sent a complaint against him to the District Educational Officer, Munger. The officer conducted due enquiry and found out there was no basis for the complaint. Gurudev’s character was such a brilliant one that it even made others closer to shine. Those who raised their fingers against him were like the ones showing candle to the sun.  His honour increased further. However, the wicked never gives up their wickedness easily. The secretary kept following Gurudev to somehow harm him.

It is important to mention here how and when this wicked person put Gurudev in trouble. It is important to mention here that Gurudev had great interest in the work of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. While working in Chamariya High School, along with a teacher colleague, Sri Amarnath Ray of Dahiya, he attended a fifteen day Initial Training Camp (I.T.C.) of the R.S.S. The two were very intimate friends.

Following the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on 30th January 1948, the Government of India banned Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. The secretary of the school made use of this opportunity to convene a meeting of the school committee and sack Gurudev on the charge of having contact with the RSS. Gurudev had worked in this school from 13-1-42 to 14-2-48. He had to leave the school. With the passing of time, his spiritual urge also started growing. Changes started appearing in his dress and manners. He started growing long hair and beard. He started wearing ordinary dhoti, white kurta and simple footwear. He used to keep a watch, but it was a pocket watch and not a wrist watch to be worn as ornament. Such was his simple life style.

The Yogi was in an inspired mood. He started singing songs on Bharatamata. Suddenly He asked me, “Who wrote the Sangh prayer—the one they sing in Sanskrit”.

He was referring to the Prarthana of Rashtreeya Swayamsevak Sangh, a voluntary organization of the Hindu nationalists.

“I don’t remember the name of the author, Maharaj. But the Prarthana is there from the days of Dr. Hedgewar, the founder of the Sangh”. I remembered later that the prayer was written by Sri N.N. Bhide at the very inception of the Sangh, under the guidance of the founder.

The Yogi said, “I like that line very much—Thwadeeyaaya kaaryaaya baddhaakateeyam, Subhaamashisham dehi tat poortaye — त्वदीयाय कार्याय बध्दा कटीयं, शुभामाशिषं देहि तत्पूर्तये। ‘We are determined to do your work, give us Your blessings for the fulfillment of that’. That should be the spirit”.
